Wrting a Bachelor Thesis – HELP!

The time has finally come. I am in my final semester (in fact, I am already 1 semester too late). Now I have to think about a Bachelor Thesis to write about. My prof told me that I should know my topic until January. I definitely want to write about modern fantasy novels. At the beginning, I thought to compare Philip Pullman’s His Dark Marterials to John Milton’s Paradise Lost, but since I am not quite well versed in the theological topics, neither my prof, I tried to think about something else. Then my prof also gave me some advice maybe to compare His Dark Marterials with the 2 extra prequel books to the ‘His Dark Marterials’ series, ‘Lyra’s Oxford’ and ‘Once Upon a Time in the North’. However, after researching a bit, I found out that there is in general a lot about christianity and atheism involved in the whole series. So I wouldn’t know how to compare them. If I would be knowledgeable in the religious topics, I could easily compare ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ to the ‘His Dark Marterials’ series.

Well, now I have probably found the most perfect topic. I somehow want to involve English Folgklore and Mythology and compare that to the Harry Potter series, since it is obviously full of it. I though about analyzing the meaning of that use in fantasy books, and perhaps even include the extra fictional dictionary “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them” *o*

I am not quite sure yet if that is really a good idea writing your thesis about your most favorite series of all times. I had already considered writing about Harry Potter, but then I decided against it, because I thought it would destroy my love for the series, but I think nothing could ever do it. I rather think that I could learn new things about it by informing myself about English folklore and mythology. I will have to research it. If my thesis can really be about Harry Potter, then, who knows, I can maybe work somewhere that is involved with Harry Potter *o* That would be a dream!

What do you guys think about that? Is that a good idea, or do you think I should write about something different? What other topic can I write about?

Thanks for reading?

  1. For your thesis you have to work on an argument that you “love”…
Think about if you’ll feel stressed in the first week of writing… It’s not a good thing :D
Maybe, you can choose “the role of the magician” in the history of fantasy novels for a big part of the thesis, with particular attention to contemporary literature; also the uses and the roles of fantastic creatures are a big research argument, especially connected with the visual arts world, so with the representation of the characters/creatures in paintings, engravings, sculptures…
In literature, first than in visual arts, you can find another world… For example: on the hippogriph.
The fantasy literature is “full”, in Italy a “famous” hippogriph was used in the “Orlando Furioso” written by Ludovico Ariosto (1532) and in this chivalrous poem te hippogriph was the baest of the magician Atlante who ride the creature, and then was used to goo to the moon.
    And it’s only one example…
Many creatures are used by similar characters in the history of fantasy literature, but are used by other characers too ;)
So, if you like Harry Potter and it’s world, I’m sure that you’ll find something for writing about.
    Enjoy it!!!

  2. Is there an update yet about your senior thesis?
Even though I’m not really familiar with mythology and there incorporation in fantasy novels, I also would encourage you to pick a research project that involves a topic you are passionate about! You have to do a lot of research and might be frustrated at times, and when there is a boring topic on top of that you will be not satisfied with the end results.

If you want to go ahead with HP, then do it! Know your limitations in terms of resources, but exhaust them all. And you should get into Theological philosophy and religion more for contextualizing your research material.
