Book Review: “Hunting and Gathering” by Anna Gavalda

I just finished reading this book. I read it in german. My friend gave it to me last year as a Christmas gift and I just now managed to read it. I have watched the movie years ago and loved it. Audrey Tatou and Guillaume Canet. But the movie is nothing compared to the book. It so beautifully sad. One can’t decide whether to be happy or sad, whether to cry or to laugh. I readthis book in 7 or 8 days. It’s quite good, actually, although I have also read books as thick as this in 2 or 3 days. But with my exam, I was in a good pace.

Although this story is almost only built upon characters, I found it very interesting, maybe because of that. I love reading about characters in a book. If I had the choice to select between the two – Character or action – I would choose character. I often get bored when reading about actions. I love reading dialogues, or about the past of some characters, or interaction between two or more characters. This had it all. It also had action, but it still was interesting.  It had dialogues, and the 4 important characters interacting with each other. I also liked that it was written from the view of the 4 characters, and not only from one. And it slowly tells the story of the 4 characters. Starting slowly, and then exposing every single detail.

All in all, this book was a wonderful journey through Paris, from food to feelings. Very cute and sentimental.

Final review – 9/10: I would recommend it to everyone, if you are only slightly interested in Paris and Art.
